The Jomon earthenware produced by our ancestors is now
a relic of great historical value, but it was Taro Okamoto
who first recognized it in the art world with his“ Theory of
Jomon Earthenware: A Dialogue with the Fourth Dimension,”
published in 1952. Like Okamoto, many people are fascinated
by Jomon earthenware and clay figurines, perhaps
because they suddenly recall memories of their ancestors
that remain in their genes. Humans have come into contact
with the past through the self, communed with traditions,
and passed them on in various forms to future generations.
Tens of thousands of years have passed through the layers
of time that have brought us to where we are today.
However, the world is still in a constant state of conflict,
and the game of fighting for life is still being played. Now,
with the wave of digitalization, a new layer of time is beginning.
Through my work, I would like to express what universal values
are in this chaotic era. ーSho-ichiro MATSUOKA
