Profile

1993年奈良県生まれ。
同志社大学神学部中退後、イギリスのブリストルに留学。帰国後、祖父の会社である株式会社ミカサスポーツに入社。野球グラブ職人として修行。新型コロナウイルス感染症拡大を機にアーティスト活動を本格化。
2025年「Asemic Painting（Amalgam Art Gallery / 東京）など個展開催。2020年「美術は抽象によってこの世界の本質に迫る」（渋谷ヒカリエ / 東京）、2021年「現代アート注目の3人展」（東京ミッドタウン）、2023年「春遊会」（京王百貨店新宿店 / 東京）などグループ展やアートフェアに多数参加。

Born in Nara in 1993.
Left the Faculty of Theology at Doshisha University and studied abroad in Bristol, UK. After returning to Japan, joined his grandfather’s company, Mikasa Corporation, and trained as a baseball glove craftsman. Began pursuing artistic activities in earnest during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Statement

UMEHARA KAZUHIROの作品のコンセプトは主に２つあります。一つ目は「アンチ・オートマティズム」であり、従来のオートマティズムが重視した無意識的・感性的創作に対し、二項対立的アプローチにより理性的・秩序的手法に挑戦します。一定のルールに基づく反復筆致を通じて、文字のようで文字でない非具象的線描を描き、四象限マップにおける理性的非具象という新領域の開拓に挑戦します。二つ目は、アセミック・ライティングの概念を内包した「アセミックペインティング」で、意味性のない記述により、鑑賞者による多様な解釈を促進します。ジャック・デリダの「差延」的解釈、フェルデナン・ド・ソシュールの「記号論」的解釈、ロラン・バルトの「作者の死」的解釈といった現代思想と連動し、視覚的言語と非言語の中間領域を探求します。

The concept of UMEHARA KAZUHIRO’s work is based on two main ideas. The first is “Anti-Automatism.” In contrast to traditional automatism, which emphasizes unconscious and emotional creation, I take a dialectical approach, pursuing a rational and systematic method. Through repetitive brushstrokes governed by specific rules, I create non-figurative linear compositions that resemble letters yet carry no linguistic meaning, exploring a new domain of rational abstraction within a four-quadrant framework. The second is “Asemic Painting,” which incorporates the concept of asemic writing—mark-making devoid of semantic content—to encourage diverse interpretations by viewers. His practice engages with contemporary philosophical thought, including Jacques Derrida’s concept of “Différance,” Ferdinand de Saussure’s “semiotic theory,” and Roland Barthes’s idea of The Death of the Author, seeking to explore the interstitial realm between visual language and non-language.
